What makes this nominee inspiring?
A most distinguished professional engineer, who among many other achievements significantly contributed to the design of the Humber Bridge, particularly the initial design of the concrete towers. Earlier he played a significant role in the construction of the (first) Bosporus Bridge in Turkey, both in the employment of the major engineering consultancy Freeman Fox & Partners. He later moved into academia as a Lecturer at the University of Sussex, and remains active in retirement, offering engineering consultancy services as 'BCD Engineering'. He was always notably academically bright at Hymers, gaining high grades at O and A Level, and went up to Cambridge (St Johns College) to read Mechanical Sciences (retitled Engineering the following year), and after gaining First Class Honours later went on to do a PhD.
