Christopher Culpin

Attended Hymers College:

1954 - 1962

What makes this nominee inspiring?

Historian, teacher, author. One of the most inspiring and influential educators over the last 40 years, instrumental in the development of the Schools History Project and a range of public examinations in History.

After University, Christopher completed a PGCE at Sussex and was then involved in teaching mainly history in 'Secondary Modern' Schools, rising to become a Deputy Head. Simultaneously he was part of the Schools' History Project and a Senior GCSE Examiner. He retired from teaching in 1986 to become a freelance text-book writer who authored/co-authored ground-breaking paperbacks/text-books/pamphlets on an eclectic mix of UK/world history. The novelty in Culpin's approach to teaching history has been to bring it alive with illustrations, even music and other art-forms to make the subject of real interest to thousands of pupils within the 'Secondary Modern' environment.
