We heard from Emily Powell, who started working at the school in September 2023, four years after leaving the school as a student.

What do you remember of being a student at Hymers?

My favourite memories from Hymers were playing trumpet in all the bands at various events. I used to arrange all the Brass Band pieces when I was in 6th Form, and I even conducted the Brass Band in some concerts too. I also really enjoyed playing hockey against different schools. In year 13, I was captain of the 2nds Hockey Team, and this also taught me how to be a good leader and team player. Academic wise, my favourite subject was mathematics and I remember enjoying most of these lessons.

What did you do after leaving school?

I went to study Foundation Film Music at Leeds Conservatoire for a year. After that I got a job as a Test Site Operative and Infection Prevention Control Marshal at a Covid-19 Test Site. I worked long hours and learnt a lot about working with a wide variety of people.

After the test sites closed, I got a Teaching Assistant role at Swanland Primary School during term time and an Adventure Guide, later Teams & Activities Manager, role at Let Loose Adventure Park in Beverley. Throughout my working life I have grown in confidence and enhanced my skills. I want to keep growing as a woman to eventually become a mother and role model for my future children.

What is your role now at Hymers College?

I am now the NCS Officer at Hymers College. I’ll be working with 15-17 year olds from all around Hull, giving them new experiences and life skills to help prepare them for adulthood! I have worked with Hymers NCS every summer for the past five years now and this has been the only job I’ve really enjoyed. It feels nice to be somewhere familiar and to have a great team and a great boss.

What are your memories of former teachers who are now your colleagues?

I believe I was a good student, because I never got any detentions! It feels nice that they have known me and seen me grow from a child into the woman I am today. Hopefully they can continue to watch me grow and also think that I will be a good mother someday too.

How does it feel to be back at the school?

It feels good to be back, but also a bit weird! I am keen to pick up my trumpet playing again and it’s great that I’ve been welcomed back to Wind Band. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming; I couldn’t ask for more.
