Shyam Moudhgalya, OH 2009-16 recently returned to talk to the Medical Society about his career thus far as a Doctor.

The talk was a full circle in history as he recalled, 10 years ago, sitting in B3 himself listening to a newly qualified doctor give a talk to the Medical Society.

Shyam's journey after gaining his A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths (A*'s) and an AS Level in Physics took him to St Georges University London where is gained his MBBS Undergraduate degree with distinction. Whilst studying Shyam also undertook an Intercalation degree in Physiology at Kings College with first class honours. This was followed by 2 years foundation training in Newcastle.

In 2024 Shyam started his ACCS Anaesthetics training and is currently completing his placements in emergency medicine and acute medicine. This history into Shyam’s medical journey gave the students an insight into the long journey and dedication needed for a career in medicine.

Whilst at Hymers Shyam was a keen sportsman playing on both the cricket and rugby teams, something he continued whilst studying. He spoke to the students about the importance of having other interests outside of medicine, not only to show and develop other skills but to also help as an outlet for what is a high pressure job. 

An informative talk gave the students pros and cons of medicine as a career, things to consider when choosing a medical school, how to prepare for interviews and the various paths once at medical school.

Our medical society where keen to hear if he would do anything different if he was 17 years old again and also the different routes available to them after their A Levels. Shyam said "The hardest thing about medical school is getting into medical school!"

Shyam was taught by Dr Jarvis who was able to listen to the talk and have a catch up after with her former student.
