We were delighted to welcome Tom Elstone, OH 2006-16 back to speak to our aspiring lawyers who are considering their options after Hymers and the law pathways that are open to them.
Tom shared with us his journey after Hymers and the route he took into Law. He got 3A's at A-Level (History, English Literature and Philosophy and Ethics) and went to Exeter to study History. As a keen Sports man at Hymers he was both Captain of 1st XI Cricket and Captain of 1st XI Hockey. Tom is now a Solicitor at Whitehead Monckton where he has been since graduating. He covered four disciplines in his trainee contract; Property, Tax and Estate Planning, Dispute Resolution and Corporate, and is now settled in the Dispute Resolution department, which he thoroughly enjoys.
Tom was able to share how important his work experience in a myriad of employment has been for him before becoming a solicitorand how his various skills set has developed from his roles. Tom shared his experience of completing a Humanities degree before following into a law pathway and the benefit that he felt this had on his route into Law.
Tom had some valuable tips about demonstrating how engaged you are as a person when applying for roles and at interview. The importance of been able to engage with a variety of the community is prevalent in Law and if you are able to demonstrate a passion for your sport or hobby, this he believes can be most helpful.
Tom was taught Politics by Dr Smith and passed on his best to one of his former teachers.
Thanks for joining us, Tom. All the best with your career and we do hope to see you again sometime.
