Richard Dunning, OH 1995-2002 is now a Professor of Land Economy and Housing at the University of Liverpool, where he is the Director of Research in Planning. As well as being an experienced lecturer and researcher, he is also the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Housing and Society, and was previously the Vice Chair of the Housing Studies Association. Now living in the Merseyside area, Richard misses the expansive skies of East Yorkshire.
During his talk with the Sixth Form Geography students, he spoke about the role of geography in diverse professions, and the ability of geographers to engage across distinct specialisms (economic, legal, design, built and natural sciences).
He also talked about the £1 house scheme in Liverpool, whereby the council sold houses that they decided not to demolish to local residents to renovate. The scheme required significant sweat and emotional equity from the residents, as well as about 50% of the price of a traditional home purchase in the area to fund the renovations. The local neighbourhood has seen significant improvements since the scheme, but there still remain homes that have not been renovated.
