Law Society Speak to Thomas

Thomas Innes, OH 1997-2007, spoke to the students about his legal career in arbitration

Thomas Innes, OH 1997-2007 kindly spoke to our Law Society about his career pathway into Law after leaving Hymers College. Tom's A levels of Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Music took him to Kings College, London to study law and then on to Reading to study a Master's Research in Law.

An opportunity for him to take a paralegal role came up at his current firm, Steptoe LLP, where he has been for 11 years working up from Paralegal to Associate, then Partner, and now Deputy Chair of International Arbitration. Steptoe LLP is an International law firm and Tom has enjoyed the opportunities it has brought him.

Tom gave a detailed day-to-day description of what his legal workload looks like and examples of cases he has worked on. He had some valuable top tips for our students currently considering a career pathway in Law, such as to set yourself apart, show your excellence in whatever that may be, demonstrate your soft skills and how you can articulate with others, keep abreast of what is happening in current affairs and the business world e.g. read a paper and to stay flexible to other opportunities as this will open other doorways. Tom offered any future support to our current students with any questions they may have about his Law career and working in disputes.

Thanks, Tom We appreciate your support and guidance to our current student body. Keep in touch and we hope to see you again soon.

Thank you to all of our Old Hymerians who support our current student body with insights into their careers.
