Amitava Banerjee was Head Boy in his final year at Hymers College, having studied at the school from 1986 in the Junior School until completing his A Levels in 1996. Over the last couple of years, since lockdown, Amitava has delivered via zoom a school assembly and talks to the Biology Society.
He recently returned in January 2023 to speak to the Biology Society, in person, to talk about his medical studies after leaving Hymers College and his career path since. He spoke about studying Medicine at the University of Oxford for six years before specialising as a Cardiologist and later becoming a Professor of Clinical Data Science.
He emphasised that there are many areas of medicine to be considered and he originally thought he would go into the field of neurology. Now he spends part of the week as a Consultant Cardiologist at UCL Hospital and Barts NHS Trust and the rest of the time conducting research, currently looking at the long-term effects of COVID.
The students asked him many questions about his career choices and also for advice as they too consider a path in medicine.
Thank you, Amitava for visiting the school.
