In early February 2025, Newcastle Cathedral Choir embarked on an extraordinary musical journey: recording a brand-new CD that vividly captures the spirit of Advent through to Epiphany. Under the expert direction of Director of Music, Ian Roberts and with the brilliant accompaniment of Assistant Director of Music, Kris Thomsett at the organ, the choir dedicated two evenings to the Lay Clerks and three to the Choristers. The result is an album that will stand as a cherished milestone in the cathedral’s rich musical heritage.
Guiding the recording sessions were the esteemed Head of Choral Studies at the RSCM, Adrian Lucas, and masterful sound engineer Tim Cranfield (also a deputy and choral director), ensuring the highest artistic and technical excellence. This CD showcases a diverse and captivating repertoire, highlighting the choir’s versatility and musicianship. With performances by the full choir, the boys’ and girls’ ensembles, and special collaborations with renowned harpist Helena Pearson, the recording truly celebrates the depth and beauty of sacred choral music. Additionally, the Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars unite for a breathtaking standalone ensemble performance.
A particular highlight of the recording was the premiere of 'I Sing of a Maiden', composed by Ian Roberts and performed exquisitely by the Cathedral Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars. This stunning piece features a mesmerising duet between Alto Lay Clerk Laura Oldfield and Tenor Lay Clerk Tom Klafkowski, weaving together harmonies that will linger in listeners’ hearts. The album also includes two compositions by Kris Thomsett; Balulalow and The Coventry Carol, which showcase his distinctive musical voice and deep sensitivity to choral textures. Another standout moment is Holst’s Nunc Dimittis, where I had the immense privilege of delivering a solo performance, despite battling a sinus infection! As they say, the show must go on.
Recording in the grandeur of an empty cathedral presented its unique challenges, from unexpected traffic noise to the occasional creaking or rustling of the building or even music copies, leading to multiple retakes and plenty of shared laughter among the choir. But these moments only strengthened our camaraderie, reinforcing the spirit of dedication, passion, and joy that defines our music-making.
For me, Advent music holds a profound significance, as it always coincides with my birthday. Being part of this recording has been a deeply moving and fulfilling experience, a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of everyone involved. As an alumnus, I am proud to contribute to the legacy of Newcastle Cathedral Choir, inspiring the next generation of musicians to carry this tradition forward with the same passion and commitment.
We eagerly anticipate sharing this CD with listeners who cherish the richness of sacred choral music. May it serve as a source of joy, reflection, and inspiration for years to come.
