Congratulations to William Cherry, OH 2014-22, who has been nominated for Best Young Filmmaker by the World Film Festival, which is hosted in Cannes.
As a child, I made mini-films which I would then craft trailers for, so the desire to become a filmmaker was always there. I've been expanding my collection of film equipment for a few years now, so that the productions can be on a professional level.
His film, 'Milo' is about a young boy who is forced to survive amidst a warzone that erupts as rival soldier units go head to head in an epic action short. With a hidden message and powerful storyline twist, this short will grip you from start to end.
I've submitted it to film festivals globally for 2025. I cannot share the film yet as it needs to have cleared some of the big festivals finishing August time. I started filming straight after my A level exams and for the five months up to December, I worked hard on editing it.
In the film, I cast my friend Matthew Crossland (OH 2014-24), who was also at Hymers College. Another member of the cast is a current Hymers pupil and I also cast friends who I have made from acting jobs I have been in prior. The vocal artist for the final score of the film was a talent who is also a current Hymers student.
I loved making the film and I hope the success it has seen in the January festivals will continue to grow throughout the year. I hope that I can take what I have learnt through making this short film and apply it again to my next one. I would love to become a Director in the future and create a diverse portfolio of films.
Good luck, William. The trailer for his film can be seen below:
