Earlier this year, freelance translator, Jenny Aitken, OH 1989-99, returned from Roland-Garros, Paris (The French Open), where she was preparing the subtitling for the French Tennis Federation’s video team.

Through one of my main clients, Web Traductions, I've worked for the French Tennis Federation since 2008. We receive texts to translate from French into English all year round but especially in the run-up to Roland-Garros and the Masters in November.

I've been involved in translating articles for their website, ticketing website, press releases and even the texts for their "Tenniseum" (Museum of the French Tennis Federation) which was really exciting to see in real life!  I also do the translations for the signage around the stadium, as well as on the big screens.

Things start to come in around February time, then it gradually ramps up until the tournament starts, which is when I go to Paris. I worked on-site on the website team in 2008 and 2009, then in the press office in 2010, 2011 and 2013, but then had to stop because of family commitments. I was delighted when they asked if I'd like to come back last year, so I jumped at the chance!

I worked on-site at Roland-Garros last year and this year, and at the Rolex Paris Masters tennis tournament last November, and will hopefully go back this November. I was on the video team, doing the English subtitles for the videos that the French Tennis Federation (FFT) posts on YouTube, their website and social media. It's really fun, and a change from my everyday written translation work.

I've also been doing some translating and proofreading for the Paris 2024 Olympics this summer, and will be involved during the Games themselves, though from home, not on site this time!
