What did you aspire to whilst at school?
To be completely honest, I never had a firm grasp on what I wanted to do or become. Instead, I embraced every opportunity that came my way and enjoyed learning from a wide range of experiences, from sports to academics. I was always open to trying new things and discovering new passions. One thing that consistently caught my attention, however, was technology. I found myself drawn to it and eager to learn more about its inner workings and potential. Even though I didn't have a clear path in mind, I knew that technology would play a significant role in my future.
What do you do in your role as an apprentice?
At the time of writing this, my official title is Business Program Manager (BPM). As a BPM, I play a crucial role in driving business priorities and collaborating with internal stakeholders. I am responsible for managing expenses, budgeting, and events. Additionally, I manage organisational projects, promote policy compliance, and support the growth of Business Support teams. In short, a key player in ensuring the smooth operation and success for Microsoft.
How did your time at Hymers prepare you for your career?
At Hymers, I had the opportunity to develop my interpersonal skills and to present myself authentically and confidently. The guidance and support I received along with the academic excellence helped me grow as a person and as a professional. I believe that these qualities make me a valuable asset for a leading company like Microsoft.
Where do you hope this will lead you in the future?
I'm not too focused on what's next right now, as I prefer to enjoy the journey. But I know there are many opportunities ahead. I'm grateful for the skills and the strong network I'm developing at Microsoft, which could open many doors for me. I could pursue a degree apprenticeship, a full-time role, or switch to another company. My aspiration is to advance in the field of AI, where there is so much innovation happening.
What has been your proudest moment?
I feel very proud of the project I am working on right now as an apprentice. I have been given the responsibility of leading one of the biggest projects in my sector, which is a great honour for me.
What one piece of advice would you give to current pupils and recent leavers as they look to their futures?
A sentimental advice would be to never give up. I applied to over 100 apprenticeships and only got offered one. Things might get hard but if I had given up, I wouldn't have been where I am right now. More practical advice would be to start early, make a LinkedIn profile, gain some work experience, and network with others. Network is gold.
