For Phil Almond, OH 1997-2001, his music career started at Hymers in the orchestras and choirs, especially providing solos for the Music and Mulled Wine evenings. Now living in the Newcastle area, he has continued with his singing as part of Newcastle Cathedral Choir.
At the start of February 2024, he was privileged to be part of the Choral Evensong as they performed in front of Classic FM presenter and former chorister Alexander Armstrong as part of his 'Choral Adventure'. Phil told us more about the evening:
On the 5th of February 2024, Newcastle Cathedral had the distinct honor of hosting the Cathedral Music Trust, accompanied by the renowned Alexander Armstrong (Ambassador for the Trust), for a truly enchanting evensong experience. As the Principal Tenor Lay Clerk, it was a privilege to lend my voice to such a momentous occasion.
The Cathedral was filled with the harmonious melodies of the choir, resonating through the hallowed halls as we joined together in song. Alexander Armstrong, whose passion for choral music is both palpable and infectious, read the second lesson and the evening took on a magical quality that will long be remembered by all who were present. In a delightful nod to his role as the host of the beloved quiz show Pointless, Armstrong sprinkled the praise on the choir with his trademark wit and charm.
The presence of the Cathedral Music Trust added an extra layer of significance to the event, highlighting the importance of supporting and preserving the rich tradition of choral music in cathedrals across the country. It was a testament to the power of music to unite people from all walks of life in a shared appreciation for beauty and artistry.
On the 6th of February 2024, Classic FM aired Alexander Armstrong's reflections on his visit to Newcastle Cathedral and the previous night's evensong between 10 AM and 1 PM. It was a captivating insight into the experience of one of Britain's most beloved voices. For those who may have missed the live broadcast, the event is available for viewing on YouTube, allowing audiences to relive the magic of the evening and immerse themselves once again in the transcendent power of choral music.
As an alumnus of Hessle Mount and Hymers College where my musical journey began, I am filled with pride to have been a part of such a momentous occasion. It serves as a reminder of the importance of cherishing our musical heritage and nurturing the talents of future generations of choristers and musicians.
The evensong was not just a performance; it was a celebration of the beauty and wonder of choral music, and I am grateful to have been a part of it. Here's to many more evenings filled with music, laughter, and camaraderie at Newcastle Cathedral, where the spirit of harmony continues to thrive.
