After studying at Hymers College for 10 years from 1996 until 2006, Sean Scott went straight into the working world installing specialist resin flooring products. Not long after, Sean teamed up with Old Hymerian, Aaron Scott OH 1997-2004 (no relation!) to create his own contracting business, which after a number of years of success he would sell in a management buyout to fund the creation of Vuba Chemical Innovations Ltd.

Vuba is a Beverley-based company that formulates and manufactures a range of specialist resin-based chemical products. The flagship products are Easihold – a DIY product for which Mrs Hinch is a brand ambassador; and Resin Bound Surfacing, where Vuba has become the worldwide market leader and is endorsed by celebrities such as Michelle Keegan and Mark Wright.

The business has grown to 60 staff and a turnover of £20m+ this financial year, of which around 25% is exported into Europe and North America. The company has seen many successes over the years, with this year being included in several top business lists.

This year we’ve made the Financial Times Top 1,000 Companies in Europe, Sunday Times Top 100 and the FEBE Top 100 for the 2nd year running, where I bumped into Old Hymerian Finian O’Kane (OH 1998-2008) at the award ceremony.

Sean studied both Business Studies and Economics while at Hymers College, subjects that he loved.

Mr McTeare crowning me “King Sean” after a Business Studies test I’d done well in was quite a pivotal moment for me on hindsight. Academically, I had tried but not done well until that point, and the recognition was encouraging for me.

He loved his teachers at Hymers College, but Mr Gravelle and Mr Exley were his favourites.

My idea of a perfect day would be a double economics with Exley and a trip out in the mini bus with Mr Gravelle at lunch! I also found Mr Morris as I got to know him a bit more through Young Enterprise to be a fantastic person.

Doña Isabel had a passion for all things Spain, but maybe more for telling on me to my form tutor, Mr Exley! A little older and wiser, I’m thankful for her efforts and her passion. My Spanish language has come in very useful and Vuba now has a production facility near Alicante.

Sean was MD of the first Young Enterprise company from Yorkshire to win the National Competition at The Savoy in London, and 2nd in the European Competition. He also won a national business competition called CIMA which was a proud moment.

Sean also enjoyed the sporting opportunities at Hymers, especially the competitive ethos. He enjoyed playing for teachers like Mr Walmsley and Mr Exley in the younger years and fondly remembers Mr O’Byrne giving him a cricket bat after he scored a 74 not out!

An outstanding memory for Sean is the European Finals of Young Enterprise.

We met some great people I still keep in touch with, and it definitely gave me inspiration for my career now.
