Simon Hewitson studied at Hymers from 1985 to 1994 before studying Business Studies for four years at Northumbria University. Following university he studied to become a Chartered Accountant. This qualification and experience allowed him to specialise in corporate finance as well as working in industry.
The route was challenging at times trying to study alongside a full time role. It gave me an excellent grounding in business and a highly regarded qualification which has been instrumental in my career.
After a career in Business and Finance, he is now moving back into Corporate Finance.
I am working with a newly established firm, Williams Ali Corporate Finance, that is disrupting the North East Corporate Finance market place and has a great buzz. There is a passionate and experienced team that are focused on advising clients to deliver them exceptional results and I am looking forward to being part of that exciting journey.
Simon is still in touch with friends from Hymers, and his two closest friends are David Joseph (OH 1987-94) and Matthew Kendall (OH 1985-94). They had a reunion around 10 years ago and it was great to see so many former pupils.
Hopefully there maybe another soon so we can catch up again.
We asked him who his favourite teacher was and it was a difficult question for Simon. There were a number of teachers that had a massive positive impact on his time at Hymers. Mr Nichols was a great former teacher and Miss Stanyon was influential on his enjoyment of history. Mr Gravelle and Mr Exley were also instrumental in forging his interest in business as well as his enjoyment of rugby over the years.
The main sport that Simon played was rugby and he represented the 1st XV in his upper sixth he massively enjoyed playing for the school from U12s onwards.
A special mention would have to go to Mr Wood, whilst not a teacher he was our U16 rugby coach. A wonderful man that was a massive attribute to the school and positive influence to many former pupils.
Simon's fondest memory from Hymers is receiving an award for business studies at A level and feeling extremely proud to have been a pupil and seeing the look on his parent's faces.
