Since leaving Hymers, George has enjoyed success in quizzing. He was part of the team that won the 2019 British Student Quiz Championships as a PhD student and has recently appeared on the BBC2 game show Only Connect.
He was at Hymers from year 4 to year 13, finishing in 2009. He went on to do PPE at Balliol College, Oxford, where he also did a Masters degree in Economics. After a few years working in London, he returned to Oxford to do a DPhil, finishing in 2020.
He is now a Janeway Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Cambridge and a Bye-Fellow at Christ's, Cambridge.
I auditioned for the show in 2020 during lockdown, and it was shot while the country was still in partial lockdown at the beginning of 2021,which is why I had a very questionable haircut in the first round. I had a really good time on the show, with my team winning all our games to the final, where we unfortunately lost by a few points to a very strong team.
The hardest bit of the show was coming up with the facts that the host, Victoria Coren-Mitchell, says about you at the beginning, I certainly bent the truth coming up with those!
Well done George!
