Hymers College opened in 1893 as a school for boys on the site of the old Botanic Gardens of Hull.

Rev John Hymers died on the 7th April 1887 and left in his will the following bequest: 'I give and bequest all the residue if my real and personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever to the Mayor and Corporation of the Borough of Kingston-upon-Hull in the County of York, wherewith to found and endow a Grammar School in their town on the models of the Grammar Schools at Birmingham and Dulwich for the training of intelligence in whatever social rank of life it may be found amongst the vast and varied population of the town and port of Hull'.

As a result of his legacy, the Botanic Gardens were purchased and a school, with playing fields around it, was built for 500 students.

Since it opened in 1893, the school has expanded and facilities now include a theatre, swimming pool and a Learning Resource Centre.  In 1971, the first girl arrived in the sixth form of the school, before the school went co-ed in 1989.

Thank you to our founder, John Hymers, who without his legacy there would have been no Hymers College and the opportunities that have opened for many of us.
