Charles Henry Gore was appointed as the first Headmaster of Hymers College on May 1st 1893 and he remained with the school for 34 years, until he retired in August 1927.
Born in Liverpool on May 19th 1862, Charles was educated at Bowden College, Cheshire and Owens College, Manchester. He completed his education at Kings College, Cambridge in 1885.
He completed three teaching posts before starting at Hymers College, eight years later, at the age of 31.
Charles Gore specialised in the teaching of Mathematics and Science. For his role as Headmaster, he was paid an annual salary of £350 together with a Capitation Fee of £2 per annum for every boy attending the school. This increased to £550 in May 1921.
In 1920, he became the first President of the newly formed ‘Old Hymerians Association’’, a position that he held for two years.
He sadly drowned aged 83 years, while fishing on 6 June 1945.
