This year, as the students solemnly walk past Hymers College's War Memorial after the school's remembrance service, they will also be able to view the inspirational artwork of an Old Hymerian.
The artworks were displayed at St Mary’s Church, Lowgate last year (2023) and are a series of five that were painted over a year ago called Cutting the Wire. After the first one, 1914, there is Cutting the Wire: Gas 1915, Cutting the Wire: Somme 1916 and Cutting the Wire: Ypres 1917.
The final one is called A Greater Light 1918, based on the Bidding Prayer before the Nine Lessons and Carols….."Let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light".
In the below photo, the artworks are out of order, so reading downwards it is 1916,1914,1915, 1918, 1917:
