Hymers Tennis Team's Narrow Defeat at Wembley

We were recently (January 2024) delighted to hear from Robin Storey (OH 1949-59) who emailed us a photo of himself from when he was in the tennis team in the late 1950s.

The photograph appeared in the Hull Daily Mail in 1959.  Hymers had entered, for the first time, a public schools tennis competition called the Youll Cup which was held at the All England Tennis Club at Wimbledon.

Unknown to any others schools for tennis,  our team were surprised that the top schools had coaches and support staff. The four of us were in digs in Southfield.  We were stronger than we seemed, however, for myself and Davis were Yorkshire and North of England junior tennis champions.

To most schools’ surprise we reached the final and only a poor showing on finals day prevented us from taking the trophy.

We did, however, have tea in the Clubhouse, after the final, with the Chairman of the All England Club and Dan Maskell, a well-known T.V. Tennis commentator.

Happy Days!

Dr. Robin Storey, OH 1949-59

Along with Robin, in the team were Ian Davis (OH 1949-59), Dave Tomlinson (OH 1951-60) and Mike Pittock (OH 1951-59).

A search of the Digital Archives about the sporting event, also brought up a mention of Ian and Robin being chosen to represent Yorkshire earlier on in the summer, in the 1959 July Hymerian:

The Public Schools' Lawn Tennis Tournament was included in the tennis report that featured in the 1959 December Hymerian:
