The Great North Run 1990

Can you spot the four teachers who were featured on the front page of the Telegraph Sports section in September 1990 running the Great North Run?
Can you spot Dr. Wilson, Mr Price, Mr Kelsey and Mr Exley?

The race occurred on Sunday 16 September 1990 and 30,000 runners took part.  Among them were Business Studies and Economics teacher, Mr Exley, Modern Languages teacher, Dr Wilson and C.D.T. teachers Mr Price and Mr Kelsey.  Running for fun, they completed the race in a time of 1 hour 44 minutes.

When asked about his memory of the run, Mr Exley said:

I used to run like the wind; they called me Gentle Breeze! Now I only have two speeds, slow and stop!

Mr Kelsey also remembered the event:

I remember it very well, in fact I still have a copy of the original newspaper; Daily Telegraph.  The only thing I can  remember is suffering from the after affects from the night before and not being able to find the car after the race.  I had to sit in a cafe and send Les Price (who was always super fit) out to find it!  We did a few of these half marathons during our time at Hymers.  What were the chances of being featured in a national newspaper though?

Dr Wilson also remembered the lost car after the end of the race:

I remember the event very well.  There was a fantastic atmosphere and we had a really great day out together. I recall that Phil Kelsey and Les Price spent about two hours frantically searching for their car at the finish, having failed to note where they had parked it!

It was Les Price who introduced me to running (along with Gordon Jibson from the Junior School) many years ago and the bug spread rapidly through the staff; Phil, Les, Neil Exley (alias Billy), Ian Stead, Chris Fitzpatrick, Steve Walmsley, Ian Nicholls, Richard Summers, Helen Jackson, Paul Cook, Charlie Gaynor-Smith et al. There would be a contingent out pretty much every lunchtime, running two, five, eight or ten miles according to time available.  Happy days!

My last outing (with the group) was on 6th July 2006.  Mrs Janice Summers kindly commemorated the occasion with a photo below.

And in case you can't find them in the newspaper article, we have circled them in the below photo.
