Memories at Hymers |
On Friday 29 May 1953, the whole school sat down in the Main Hall to celebrate the Coronation.
In attendance were a number of distinguished guests and speeches were given by the Headmaster, Mr Roach, the Lord Mayor, Arthur Richardson, the Rev. Kenyon (Deputy Chairman of the Governing Body), Councillor Bernard Lowthrop (Old Hymerian), and the Head Prefect (Roderick Neil Tinkler, OH 1948-53).
At the time, the school, and the country, were still recovering after the Second World War, so it was thought to be a very grand affair with flags from all the commonwealth countries hanging from the balconies. Towards the end of the banquet, Beefeaters came round and presented every student with Coronation gifts of sweets and a silver spoon.
