Spark of Innovation: Andy's Engineering Conversation

Andy Brown, OH 1984-94, spoke to the Sixth Form Engineering Society

Andy Brown, OH 1984-94, left Hymers keen to do something with his life that was still around after he was.

He read Civil Engineering at The University of Manchester and has since worked for a number of household names in engineering and construction, designing and building some of the UK’s most complex and iconic projects in the last thirty years. For six years he was Head of Construction Planning & Logistics at High Speed Two, setting out how our construction industry would tackle this globally recognised mega project.

Other projects he has been involved in leading include The Shard, Heathrow’s Terminal 5, the Birmingham BullRing, the Northern Line Extension, the redevelopment of the Café Royal, improving the British Museum, a new Garrison at Colchester for our 16th Air Assault Brigade and London’s Millennium Bridge.

Andy has loved the opportunities his career has given him and the opportunities to grow through such projects. He has become a leading expert in construction logistics and project enablement and has worked across all roles in the construction process including Authority, Client, Principal Contractor, and as part of the supply chain, leading smaller businesses. Businesses he has represented include Arup; Transport for London; McAlpine; Mace; Laing O’Rourke and London Underground.

In recent years Andy, as a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers; and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building and of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport has started to assess the competence of individuals and businesses alike, as they progress in their professional journeys.

In talking to the school’s engineering society, Andy will be looking to help them create a pathway to admission success, and advising on just some of the professional opportunities that exist in the Built Environment, from developing Artificial Intelligence into a genuine game changer, to some of the niche jobs within the construction sector.
