Seb's Quartet 'Rosamund Brass'

Seb Williman (OH 2018-20) recently opened the 2023 RNCM Festival of Brass and has also been nominated for Community Arts Award as part of the 2023 Yorkshire Choice Awards

Seb Williman was a student at Hymers from 2018 - 2020 and is currently a third-year undergraduate student of trumpet performance at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester. Since leaving Hymers after his A levels, Seb has gone on to perform regularly across the UK and internationally. Seb performs with various ensembles and orchestras in the North West, including his brass quartet ‘Rosamund Brass’.

Formed in 2020 amid the pandemic, Rosamund Brass was created by Seb and three fellow colleagues at the RNCM.  They have gone on to win the prestigious 2022 Phillip Jones Brass Prize, and have featured on BBC Radio 4, and this year's Christmas Carols on ITV alongside Jane McDonald. Rosamund Brass has premiered four brand new works in 2022 alone, the highlight being premiering ‘This Is The Place…’ an extensive four-movement work that depicts a different time and place in Manchester, culminating in a powerful closing movement that portrays the aftermath of the 2017 Manchester Arena Attack, with Andy Burnham’s powerful speech in the background. More recently the quartet were delighted to be asked to open the 2023 RNCM Festival of Brass, a prestigious annual event that features some of the finest brass musicians in the country.

Aside from Rosamund Brass, Seb has been the principal cornet of the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, currently ranked no.9 in the world. In 2022, Seb performed at the Yorkshire Area contest, the British Open at Symphony Hall and was the featured soloist at the Brass in Concert Championships. Seb also enjoys freelance trumpet work and has performed ‘in the pit’ on a number of shows this year, including ‘Shrek the Musical’, ‘Cinderella’, and ‘The World Goes Round’.

Between January and May 2023, Seb is performing with the Gary Clarke Theatre Company, as part of the ‘Wasteland’ tour. Wasteland is the sequel to the 2013 production ‘COAL’ with focus on the aftermath of the 1984 miners' strike. 10 years on, ‘Wasteland’ looks at post-pit closure life and the rise of the rave culture. A very powerful and poignant depiction of a topic very close to Seb, with the connections to brass bands and where Seb grew up.

Seb has also been nominated for the 2023 Community Arts Award as part of the Yorkshire Choice Awards.

Congratulations, Seb on these musical achievements, and good luck with the 2023 Community Arts Award.
