At the start of March, the Development Office travelled to Leeds for our latest Old Hymerian reunion. We gathered at All Bar One in Leeds city centre and we were joined by familiar faces for the evening.
Martin Cocker, OH 1951-56 has joined us for many events, both in Leeds where he now lives and also returning to Hull. Over the last few years, he has organised Leeds lunch reunions, at Scarbrough Hotel, Bishopsgate Street, situated near Leeds Train Station. The gatherings take place approximately twice a year and he would love to see new faces join, whether it is during a quick lunch break, even just a drink or for those who have retired, a more leisurely lunch and catch up. All are welcome and he would love to see more new faces join them. The next lunch is on Tuesday 15 April 2025 at the Scarbrough Hotel. If you work or live in the Leeds area and would like to join the lunches, please get in touch at oldhymerians@hymers.org
Proving that it is a small world, in conversations with retired District Judge Gordon Lingard, OH 1958-67, who was formerly a Partner at Stamp, Jackson and Proctor, he discovered that Peter Mason, OH 1991-98, was a trainee solicitor there, shortly after he left and Victoria Bastiman, OH 1989-96 also completed her school work experience there.
Reminiscing about the history of the school, Vikki also caught up with Martin and Tony Escreet, OH 1968-77. Tony had recently been in contact with the Development Office in relation to his great uncle, Tom Potts, OH 1926-27), who sadly was a victim of the Paragon Train accident, nearly 100 years ago.
During the evening, Duncan Hider, OH 1983-93, initiated an interesting conversation regarding interesting and unusual facts about oneself, which led onto conversations about scoring goals at Wembley, peas and cheese buyers! Lizze Sweeting, OH 2003-10 and Ellie Whitehead, OH 2001-11, who were a year apart at school, have also recently found themselves on opposite sides of a netball court!
Thank you to all those who attended and we look forward to catching up with more alumni at future events.
