The school's Act of Remembrance was held this year on November 8th, starting with the school service and followed by a lunch for the Old Hymerians who had attended. It was an honour to see so many of our alumni decorated with their military medals for the moving service, during which, the name of the 208 former students and staff who lost their lives in conflict were read out. One by one, a student stood up in the Main Hall as a name was remembered.
During the service, wreaths were placed at the War Memorial, with current OHA president, Duncan Hider, OH 1983-93 laying the wreath on behalf of the Old Hymerians. After the service, our Old Hymerians followed the students to walk past the War Memorial to pay their personal respects.
This year, we were able to stream the service via Microsoft Teams, so that those who were too far away or unable to attend in person, could share in the experience:
Many thanks, Emily, for organising the Teams session and the streaming of the Remembrance Service. It was really good to be part of the school’s event and has awoken many memories of previous years! Excellent that you still have a bugler for the Last Post and Reveille.
I can’t believe that it is 65 years since I first took part in a Hymers’ Remembrance Day service – I must be getting a bit old!!
Thank you for arranging the Teams Link for the Service. It worked very well, particularly the pupils standing up to help visualize the numbers fallen.
The service was then followed by lunch in Gore, where Headmaster, Justin Stanley read out a letter from Paul Bennett, OH 1972-82 in relation to his new appointment as National President of the Royal British Legion.
Great to see you too. I very much enjoyed last week’s service (notwithstanding the sombre circumstances of remembrance) and the lunch. It was good to catch up with some familiar faces and meet some new ones.
Thank you to the Development Office for organising today - very much enjoyed it.
Thanks again for a memorable day last Friday. I was very interested to hear the Headmaster read out the letter from Paul Bennett, and of his British Legion connection.
Thought provoking and poignant with a gravity and professionalism befitting the event – what a fantastic way for the school to show respect to the fallen – especially those of the school itself. The reading out of the names with pupils standing up one after the other was really quite emotional!
