Alumni Lunch - January 2024

The first lunch of 2024 was held in the Gore on Thursday 25 January

We turned a damp, dreary January into another enjoyable afternoon of nostalgia and camaraderie amongst our Old Hymerian community. Our January lunch isn’t always our busiest event whilst many seek warmer climates, however, we were delighted to see over 30 Old Hymerians back at school for the afternoon.  After a walk through the Main Hall and numerous memories of chairs, choir, and daily assemblies we moved on to lunch in the Old Gym, now known as the Gore.

We always enjoy welcoming back a table of former teachers, namely Geoff Wilson, Paul Meadway, Andrew Penny, Mary Chorlton and Elizabeth Powell, who enjoyed a trip down memory lane.  Many of our current teachers who worked with them popped in to see their former colleagues. Our current Sixth Form students enjoyed meeting with our Old Hymerians who shared their careers in law, politics and dentistry, to name a few, and shared some tips on the industry that our students are considering as careers.

I just wanted to let you know that all four of us found todays OH lunch thoroughly enjoyable and would love to do it again, if there is another opportunity to!  Thank you so much for letting us experience this!

Sixth Form Student

Headmaster Justin Stanley welcomed everyone back to school after a cheeky introduction from Old Hymerian, Arthur Weston OH 1955-62, who can always be relied upon to share a tale or two!

Many of our OH’s enjoyed supporting us with our current archive project and named many of our sports team photos from their time here. This was a huge help and an extremely important and valuable initiative for The Development Office. Thank you!

Matthew Tuckwood-Hill, newly appointed Bursar in September 2023 received a very warm welcome and enjoyed meeting many of our OH community.  Matthew has relocated from his previous role at Oxford and we are delighted to welcome him onboard our Hymers community. Also, thanks to Helen Robinson, our History teacher who always enjoys meeting our former students, learning about the history of the school and welcomed the offers from our alumni to support her students in their History Society and onward careers.

We enjoyed a two-course lunch from our in-house catering team which was a far cry from the school dinners that many remember.  No Pink Custard!

Our lunches are open to all of our OH community and attract a range of alumni from 18 years to 100 years old. Our eldest guest at this lunch was 97-year-old Richard Barton, OH 1936-42, who it is always an honour to have back with us, especially with his memories from his school days here.

Our next lunch at the school is on Wednesday 20th March 2024.  To book a place, or see more upcoming events, please visit www.oldhymerians.com/events.  We look forward to seeing you next time.

A quick note Emily, to thank you for organising another very pleasant lunch.  Both food and company were most enjoyable.  Thanks to the team, Jen, Vikki and of course, yourself.

Thank you and the whole team for another very enjoyable reunion/lunch. Much appreciate all your hard work

We really enjoyed the Hymers lunch last Thursday. A nice meal, and an opportunity to meet other OHs. Thank you for the impeccable organisation.
