We were delighted to be able to welcome back over 40 Old Hymerians from across the decades for the President's Cup match last month. The memories of Pocklington V Hymers matches and friendly rivalry are still apparent. We had a guest appearance from Tony Wood who coached our Old Hymerians in the 90's. Many of the former students remember him well and him "wearing Pocklington team socks all week in training the week before to prepare them!" Thanks to Fitzy for bringing him over, an absolute honour to have him back with us. Mr Exley watched the match and was greeted by some of his former students. Our guests enjoyed seeing former students who are now sports staff themselves Greg Bone, James Windeatt, Sam Clare, and Paul Cook, and sharing some rugby memories. Many former students who are now parents themselves with children in younger years playing matches enjoyed meeting up across various sidelines across the day.
Thanks to so many of you for traveling to Hull for the day rekindling former friendships and making new ones. It was an absolute pleasure to have former teammates back with us and see them together again wishing they were back on the pitch at age 18!
Afterward, both teams joined us for Steak Pie and Sticky Toffee pudding (perfect after-match food) and the presentation of the cup from OH President, Will Hairsine. Headmaster, Mr Stanley shared some words about our longstanding friendship with Pocklington dating back to the war when our pupils were sent there to study. Only the day before we had celebrated Founder's and Benefactors' Day at School and one of our former students Richard Barton, OH 1936-42, had been at Hymers and relocated to Pocklington.
It was a great day of Rugby and friendships across all the school pitches that day. Well done to the 1st XV on a strong performance in heavy weather after storm Bibet. Yes, we retained the cup for the 3rd year in succession. No pressure for next year, boys!
