On Friday 20 October 2023, we remembered the key people in the school’s past, without whom Hymers College would not exist as it does today.  We gave thanks to our founder, John Hymers, and other benefactors, such as his younger brother, Robert Hymers, for the school.

The school has a long history of benefaction going back to its earliest days. We held a day of celebrations, where our Heads of School spoke magnificently, our musicians performed beautifully and the OH community nurtured their friendships and made new ones over lunch in the old gymnasium.  Thank you to Reverend Ian Walker for delivering our service to all of our Senior School students.

Thanks to the anti-bullying ambassadors and The Development Office for a Krispy Kreme bake sale for our students where they raised vital funds for our John Hymers Bursary Fund.

The Junior School children and staff dressed in Victorian-themed costumes and learned about the history of our founder John Hymers and the opening of their school in 1893. The children were shown some of our artifacts and memoirs from the Eric Mallalieu Archive Museum including uniforms, portraits, and an invitation to the grand opening of the School.

Over lunch, we welcomed back to the school a couple of our oldest Old Hymerians - 97-year-old Richard Barton and 100-year-old Jack Dixon.  They were able to reminisce about their time at the school before the start of World War II.  Former staff were also in attendance and we were very pleased to see Mrs Chorlton, Dr Wilson, Mrs Powell (languages!), Mr Penny, Mrs Riley, Mr Meadway, Mrs Dex, and Mrs Sinkler.

Thank you to those visionary benefactors and supporters who make Hymers the school it is today. Whether your gift to us is your time or your money, we appreciate all of the support our Hymers community gives Hymers today.

Just a note to thank Emily and the team for a most enjoyable Founder's Day. It was a real treat to catch up with former colleagues and students, and to enjoy the skilled performances.

Just a quick note to thank you all once again for another enjoyable and successful Old Hymerian lunch. Both food and entertainment were very good, as were the speeches.
