Co-Education Memories from Jenny Guyat (née Babington), OH 1989-95

Jenny started in the Senior School in Year 8 when the school had become co-educational

I was one of ten girls in Year 8 who joined in 1989, although I was Jennifer Babington back then.

I have quite a funny memory of the masters calling all the boys by their surnames when doing the register but then switching to first names when they got to a girl, slightly confused as to what to call us!

The headteacher was Mr Bass and I remember him swooping out onto the field one day when there'd been a chemical spill at one of the BP factories and a purple cloud was hovering over Hull.  He looked like a bat in his black robes as he ushered us all quickly back into the school from the playing fields to hide from the gas cloud.

Since leaving Hymers, I completed a veterinary degree at the Royal Veterinary College London, worked as a practicing vet for seven years and then diversified in the vet profession and now have several roles in the profession, as well as being an entrepreneur and running two businesses.

I do remember it being quite an experience with so many boys compared to girls at school.  I can't quite believe that was 35 years ago, feeling properly old now.....!!
