35 Years of Co-education |
I arrived at Hymers in 1989, which was the same time that the girls arrived in the lower years. There were 2 classes of co-ed in Year 1 (about 25 girls), 2 classes in Year 2 (20 girls) and 9 girls in Year 9.
The school was quite an intimidating place to start for a “shiny new” teacher, fresh in my Carnegie blazer, never mind for girls of 11 years of age. Over time, the girls have had an incredibly positive effect on the school. It became a less harsh environment and the examination results improved immeasurably.
Girls sport throughout my time in the school has been more successful than the boys in terms of reaching National Finals and winning competitions. There is still a competitive edge between the sexes, but the girls more than hold their own.
A number of relationships started at school have gone on to flourish with marriages and children, although I have yet to receive an invitation to buy a hat (as Cilla Black would say).
It has been my privilege to meet many thousands of wonderful people through Hymers and it is always fantastic to catch up with Old Hymerians. I am very proud of the pathway that the school helps our students to set off on.
35 years of co-education and many more to follow.
